1.0.2 will be off to Apple soon.  Fixed in this version:

- Removed a network dependency from the startup process that could cause the startup screen to stay displayed if the network did not respond. Startup will now proceed independent of the first network checks.

- Improved startup speed.

- Added “Slow Network” pop-up to startup process if the first network connection takes longer than 35 seconds to respond (only displays once).

- Added price display to results list for items that have $$$ listings, i.e. For Sale items.

- Fixed two crash bugs in result list when bad or missing data is received from Craigslist.

- Fixed erroneous Assertion that could occur while saving unimportant app settings, and crash the app.

Now back to Christmasy evening and blowing snow!

Finally have been able to track down the issues that cause CraigSearch to crash during launch or freeze at the opening screen.  They’re entirely connected to “barely there” networks.  I can only reproduce this if I am in the basement stairwell of my building, standing halfway through the door, close to the ground.  It’s the only spot I can reliably get 1/2 a bar of Edge network.

I think this can also occur (based on reports, and first hand witness) when a network switches from one version to another, i.e. WiFi to Edge, or if there is incredibly high latency (regardless of the number of network bars you have).  Essentially the network is present but nobody is home.  So, I’m re-arranging things to make the launch process a little more tolerant of this.  I don’t think this is something I can entirely eliminate, but 1.0.2 should make it better.  Hopefully that will go to Apple this weekend.

Thanks for everyone who has written in or posted/chatted to me about this problem.  After 1.0.2 the next update will have some new features (yay)!

If CraigSearch seems to be crashing very frequently during launch, or before you can even get to running a search, please try the following: turn on Airplane Mode, run CraigSearch. See if the first few steps go smoothly. If so, exit and turn the network back on and try again.

There seems to be an intermittent issue that only some users are encountering when the network is enabled during startup cases. Don’t know what it is yet, but we’ll figure it out!

The 1.0.1 update is being actively verified by Apple, and with some luck it will be in the store soon.  Version 1.1 is well under way, and will add the ability to save searches to be re-run at any time.  There will also be some visual enhancements to the list views, and a couple of the user-suggested features.  Look for things like recent searches, and improved price listing to make the cut.

We’ll have a full list of the update contents towards the end of next week.  It should go into Apple’s hands about that time as well.  Thanks for all the suggestions, and keep them coming!

Nothing like lots of users to magnify problems. That’s bad.

The worst ones are getting fixed, and we’ll have 1.0.1 in everone’s hands as soon as Apple turns it around. That’s good!

Fixed in 1.0.1:

- Fixed two crash bugs often triggered during searching
- Fixed issue where text would float above search results list
- Improved search result list performance
- Removed erroneous GPS/location pop-up
- Improved responsiveness of “Begin Search” button

Well that didn’t take very long.  CraigSearch is in 46 states with 1000 users.  Not bad for 9 hours and word of mouth only thus far.  And 8 other countries have decided to try us out, even though we’re not available for them (yet).

We are seeing one recurring crash bug, which we hope to patch soon.

CraigSearch has been accepted to the App Store.  There were two rejections which amounted to a missing alert and improper use of an Apple standard icon.  Ironically we used it the way we did because, well, everyone else is!

But I’d rather have those sorts of 5 minute re-dos than some obscure issue.

The site is up, and the software is all prepped.  Soon it’ll be time to start marketing the heck out of this thing.  And we have some exciting updates in store for the next 30 days.  This is simply the beginning.

Craigslist has had a profound impact on my life.  Now it’ll become more accessible than ever before.

As soon as the App Store finishes its internal magic, you too can use it as we have been.
