Frequently Asked Questions
Q) How do I turn on Notifications?
A) Notifications are set from a Saved Search. You can save any search you have run by touching the + button on the top right side of the Results Tab. Only Saved Searches that have at least one search option chosen (like “Has Images” or you entered a search phrase) can have Notifications enabled.
To enable Notifications select the Saved Tab in the toolbar and hit Edit on the top right. If your saved search is narrow enough you will see a Gray Circle on it. Simply touch the Gray Circle and it will be replaced with a Green Checkmark. Hit Done on the top right, and you’re all set!
Q) Why do you need my email address for notifications?
A) We use your email address to verify ownership of the device and as a backup method of notifying you of search matches. You can enable or disable delivery of these notifications to your email address in the Settings screen by touching the i on the top right of the Search Tab. You can also click on the cancel link in each email to stop delivery of notifications. We never give out your email address to anyone.
Q) How can I stop all notifications?
A) You can stop all notifications by clicking the cancel link in any notification emailed to you. Additionally you can Edit a Saved Search and touch the Green Checkmark to stop notifications for that search.
Q) I get the emails for notifications but nothing ever pops up on my iPhone/iPod Touch. What gives?
A) The short answer is “Apple did not deliver it”. But this is not a very good answer. Notifications are sent using Apple’s Push Notification service (APN). We utilize another Portland company, Urban Airship to deliver APN messages. We guarantee you that if you get an email, we’re sending an APN as well.
At this point it is out of our hands. Some people notice no issue. Others have problems with devices that use WiFi to connect which can have issues with properly addressing a phone (DNS related problems). And some of the time an iPhone or iPod Touch simply misses the message. We recommend leaving on email notifications just to be sure.
Q) What is “Daily Digest”?
A) Daily Digest is a neat feature that lets you conserve your notifications. When enabled we will send you a notification just like we always do. But we won’t send you anymore until you run CraigSearch and check the results. Then we’ll send you the next one and wait until you check it. And so on and so forth. If you don’t check within 24 hours, we’ll send you the next one just to remind you.
The net effect is that 10 notifications can last you 10 days if you don’t check every one immediately. To enable Daily Digest go to the Settings Screen by touching the i on the top right of the Search Tab. Then touch the Email Address and you will see the Daily Digest switch on the next screen.
Q) I see a result in my search that I didn’t get notified about, why is that?
A) We utilize the power of the Mobile Cloud to do searching. But sometimes new items are posted faster than we can keep track of and slip through. CraigSearch won’t find every single match, but we guarantee it will find matches when you aren’t looking.
Q) What are you counting as a “Notification” exactly?
A) We send an email and an APN every time we charge you for a notification. But we may have found multiple results for your search, and will tell you about all of them. That way you can get 30 matches for a single notification. When in doubt we always give you the benefit.
Q) What is “Days left in cycle” and how can I change it?
A) The first time you run the app we begin a monthly countdown for your iPhone or iPod Touch starting that day. At this time you can not change the start day for this cycle. We use it to determine when to credit your account with the proper number of Monthly Notifications.
Q) The app is crashing, why?
A) There are a lot of potential reasons for a crash. We’re always pushing out new updates to fix the ones that are our fault. But sometimes it’s Apple’s fault and we’re reliant on them. Don’t hesitate to email us with details of your exact problem. We also get crash reports from Apple and pay close attention to them.
Q) Why is the email icon disabled when viewing a post?
A) The email icon will appear disabled if CraigSearch was unable to find a valid email address in the post. Not all posts contain an address and some posts use a Captcha system to reveal email addresses. You can touch the Orginal button to see the page just as if you were on a web browser and go from there.
Q) The Store in CraigSearch Pro doesn’t display anything for me to buy. How come?
A) This only occurs if there was a network error while connecting to Apple’s servers. Usually you will receive a pop-up indicating that there is a problem with the network connection. But it is possible for this to fail without an error. We recommend relaunching CraigSearch. If the problem persists try switching to a different network (WiFi, EDGE, or 3G).
Q) Why are notifications disappearing from my list?
A) Once you view a notification we clear it from your account. This happens behind the scenes and you won’t notice it is missing until the next time you run CraigSearch. We know this is not ideal and will be adding the ability to bookmark specific posts soon.
Q) I have a question that I can’t find an answer for, here or anywhere else. How can you help me?
