We’re also revamping the site a bit to be more useful, both on and off the iPhone. Look for lots of updates this week as well.

CraigSearch v1.1.3 was finally approved.

After a great deal of patience, Apple has finally approved CraigSearch v1.1.3. In the process, we have become victim to many pitfalls found within the app store approval process.

Communication was clearly a big issue. In the end, it took three submissions and months of waiting before we received a clear understanding of what they wanted. The first submission was denied because Apple decided the Exotic Services and Personals sections were too racy for their standards. The second submission was denied because they could find posts containing stripper advertisements in other sections of the application. Since we could not move forward with our plans, we have succumbed to Apples wishes and finally gained approval.

Another issue is that Apple clearly has a double standard. Try searching for strippers or even porn in Safari. You will clearly find racy pictures more impressionable than anything in CraigSearch within seconds. You could also try downloading the Google application and search for strippers or porn. Similar to Safari, you will find all the racy content your heart desires within seconds.

So, why is Apple playing big brother with the little guys and not Google? Dumb question, I think we all know the answer. We just hope to see parental controls on the iPhone so we can bring back everything Craigslist has to offer.

We’ve had a substantial upgrade in Apple’s hands that adds a bunch of features and fixes a bunch of bugs, since December 22nd. Since then, two other Craigslist based applications have made it into the store — just fine by us. All of these applications, including ours, allow access to all the Craigslist forums including those that may have adult content.

After nothing but silence from Apple for over a month, someone was gracious enough to call us at the end of January and let us know what the delay was. You can see where this is going. We’re held up, apparently, because Apple has decided that even though our application passes the Terms of Service fine, it connects to content that may be objectionable. Just like, oh an RSS reader could, or any number of hundreds of apps in the store.

So we’ve been on permanent hold because of this. Apple suggested we suppress the offending Craigslist categories in order to get published. This sucks, but what choice do we have? We made the change immediately. But that was over a week ago, and still no dice and no answer from Apple.

None of this is at all surprising to me, I’ve known my whole life how incredibly hypocritical everything Apple is. But it’s a very unfortunate thing that they are so caught up in all things lawyerly about their store that they can’t see the forest for the trees.

The basic approve/reject notion that every app faces to get into the iTunes store is laughably absurd, doubly so given the wide range of app types and degrees of quality in the store. There’s a counterpoint to every Apple TOS already in the store.

Without a clear and concise guideline, ultimately, the iTunes store is going to have some very serious problems on its hand. Either from the developers involved, or from competition that gets it. Apple does not.

In a recent post, we were excited to mention the upcoming release for CraigSearch. The saved searches feature was going to help raise the functionality of CraigSearch to that of other Craigslist applications. However, after three weeks – two submissions to Apple – four emails – and still no reply, we are at a loss. We are not prepared to bash Apple but what gives? It’s not like this is a new application needing a thorough inspection for memory leaks. This is in fact a new issue not seen before. Other updates have been streamlined through the approval process. What’s changed?

We need this release to be in the user’s hands to assist in testing and further the progression of CraigSearch. We have a new update coming soon which will allow users to receive notifications when a post is matching their saved search criteria. Furthermore, the update coming in a few weeks will enhance usability and surpass all other Craigslist applications. Is Apple really that backlogged?

We’re hard at work to bring you another update mid January, and your comments play a huge part in what we deliver. Look for two big changes:

1) We’ve heard you and will bump up the number of results to 100 (at least, hopefully more), which will give you even more capability to find what you’re looking for. There were some technical reasons for choosing 25, and we hoped it would be enough. But our users are right, and we’re going to fix that pronto!

2) We’re going to add SEARCH ALERTS! You will be able to turn alerts on for one of your saved searches, and we will then email you anytime something gets posted to Craigslist that matches your search. Pricing is still being worked out (entry level will be about $.99 per month), but it will work at a basic level for free, always and forever.

Between 100 matches at minimum, all the search options of Craigslist, Saved Searches, and Search Alerts, you’ll have all the tools to find what you want anytime, and even when you’re not actively looking.

The best is yet to come!

Apple is now reviewing our latest version (v1.1.3) which allows users to save up to 30 searches. Once v1.1.3 is released, we will have effectively made CraigSearch comparable to all the paid apps allowing you to search Craigslist. The major exception is that CraigSearch is FREE and the others are not.

What’s New in v1.1.3:
- Searches can now be saved (up to 30 of them) from the Results screen, and accessed in the new Saved tab.
- The last 5 recent searches are stored on the Recent section of the Saved tab.
- Re-run any saved or recent search by selecting it.
- Search Details are preserved when changing cities, and only reset when a new Category or Subcategory is selected, or a Saved or Recent search is run.
- Improved transitions between tabs.
- Added ability to find sublocations by searching for their parent name, in addition to their individual name.
- Added missing copyright information to results details.
- Added the Post URL to the email reply of a given post.
- Fixed crash on results list when date is missing.
- Minor UI enhancements.

Please tell all of your friends about CraigSearch.

Enjoy the holidays.

Without you, we couldn’t have developed a better “To Do List”.

As we have mentioned in the past, we like to release quick and release often. In doing so, we place a high value on user input. Our goal has been to release the beta version and have you (the users) help direct the upcoming features.

We listened to you with the first update and fixed the crash bugs which plagued the app at startup and we will continue listening. In a few weeks, you should see a feature allowing users to save searches. We feel this is a great next step and appreciate those of you who have made this suggestion.

If you would like to make a comment on a future CraigSearch idea, feel free to visit us at CraigSearch Support or make a comment in the App Store.

Keep the ideas flowing and have a happy holiday season.

Happy Searching.

I think this can also occur (based on reports, and first hand witness) when a network switches from one version to another, i.e. WiFi to Edge, or if there is incredibly high latency (regardless of the number of network bars you have). Essentially the network is present but nobody is home. So, I’m re-arranging things to make the launch process a little more tolerant of this. I don’t think this is something I can entirely eliminate, but 1.0.2 should make it better. Hopefully that will go to Apple this weekend.

Thanks for everyone who has written in or posted/chatted to me about this problem. After 1.0.2 the next update will have some new features (yay)!

There seems to be an intermittent issue that only some users are encountering when the network is enabled during startup cases. Don’t know what it is yet, but we’ll figure it out!
